Mark Driscoll Article on John Macarthur

Driscoll writes…

‘In our own day there are many faithful Reformed Bible teachers carrying on in the legacy of Charles Spurgeon. Among the best known is John MacArthur, a fifth-generation pastor. Like Spurgeon, he has committed his life to Bible preaching and teaching. This commitment extends, as Spurgeon’s did, to leading a school to train people for gospel ministry (The Master’s College and The Master’s Seminary, which we have benefited from directly since one of our Mars Hill elders is a graduate), publishing many Bible commentaries, and launching publications. He has also published a long list of books. Among those I found most helpful to me as a newer Christian is The Gospel According to Jesus, which was a seminal book in what has been called the “Lordship Salvation Controversy.” When planting Mars Hill Church, I also gleaned a lot from his books Shepherdology and The Master’s Plan for the Church.

Expository Teaching

Also admirable are his bold stands for the gospel, including appearances on major networks such as CNN, and actually being sued as a church for practicing church discipline because the Bible commands it. MacArthur has always been a strong proponent of expositional Bible teaching through books of the Bible. That idea has definitely caught on among New Calvinists, and it is now the predominant form of preaching in that tribe.

If memory serves me correctly, I was first introduced to MacArthur’s teaching ministry when I heard him on the radio as a new Christian. I went on to listen to literally hundreds of his sermons on cassette (yes, I am old enough to remember cassettes). His radio program recently includes what I believe is a new twist—answering questions from the people in his church. In my opinion, this is some of his richest teaching because he blends his knowledge of the Bible with affection for his people and the occasional insight from his own life and childhood, all of which is quite compelling.

A Bible Preacher and a Calvinist

For many years, MacArthur was not noted as a Calvinist, but rather better known for being a Bible preacher and teacher. In a conversation I had with our mutual friend, John Piper, he said that about fifteen years ago MacArthur started putting Puritan sermons in the back of his books. This prompted Piper to invite MacArthur to the Desiring God Pastors Conference and ask him publicly if he is a five-point Calvinist, to which MacArthur replied, “Yes.” Since that time we have also seen MacArthur mellow out a bit on the cessationist position that some spiritual gifts in the Bible are not for today, which he argued for in Charismatic Chaos. He has gone so far as to welcome C. J. Mahaney—who is both a devoted Calvinist and charismatic—to preach at Grace Community Church and other events. For these and many more reasons, I want to honor MacArthur in our tributes this week.’

While I am so thankful for you appreciation for John MacArthur. I am so perplexed by what appears as false humility. I agree John MacArthur is such a hero for so many people. I too call him the modern day Spurgion. Yet, I give him this title for different reason then you. I give him that title because he is really the only one that is standing strong against you. Much like the “Down Grade Controversy” many faithful men are not agreeing with John about you and your ministry. In the same way many men disagreed with Spurgion on his stance for the Gospel. John MacArthur seems to be the only one who is willing to speak out against your foul language and sophomoric humor from the pulpit. He is the only one that is exposing your misuse of scripture. He is the only one that exposed that your post- modern missioal contextualizaition, which encourages young people like my self toward worldliness will leave no room for authentic sanctifications. I fail to understand why you refuse to heed his counsel and biblical wisdom when he confronts you publicly and privately if you respect him so much? If you respect him so much then why don’t you show any true repentance when he exposes from Gods word that there are areas in your life that expose you are unqualified to lead? If you truly respect and admire the man as much as you say then why do you not heed his counsel? I am so confused. Are you trying to seem humble by posting that blog? True humility would be to make a spirit led(Phil2:12-13) repentant changes toward purity in the pulpit. That has been his counsel to you publicly and privately from what I have read in “Rape Of SOS series . I followed your ministry Mark for six months against John MacArthur wisdom and counsel. I read his “Grunge Christianity” article and thought he was to hard on you. I was wrong. I came to one major conclusion after this time of following you contextualization philosophy… The human heart( Jer 17:9) and the flesh( 1 John 2:16) are far to wicked even in a born again Christian to be able to handle all the ways you encourage young people like me to accommodate( Rom 13:13-14) our flesh and live a missional contextulaized life.

hi daron, how in the world do you know that this man has “false humility”, how can anyone tell someone they are not “qualified to lead”? how can you question whether someone has or has not shown enough “repentnce”. you people sound like you want to push jesus christ off they throne. “missional contextualized life?” i am glad the lord is not this complicated.

  4. Who knows, maybe John (Reformedispy) MacArthur is right and the greatest Greek scholars (Google “Famous Rapture Watchers”), who uniformly said that Rev. 3:10 means PRESERVATION THROUGH, were wrong. But John has a conflict. On the one hand, since he knows that all Christian theology and organized churches before 1830 believed the church would be on earth during the tribulation, he would like to be seen as one who stands with the great Reformers. On the other hand, if you have a warehouse of unsold pretrib rapture material, and if you want to have “security” for your retirement years and hope that the big California quake won’t louse up your plans, you have a decided conflict of interest – right, John? Maybe the Lord will have to help strip off the layers of his seared conscience which have grown for years in order to please his parents and his supporters – who knows? One thing is for sure: pretrib is truly a house of cards and is so fragile that if a person removes just one card from the TOP of the pile, the whole thing can collapse. Which is why pretrib teachers don’t dare to even suggest they could be wrong on even one little subpoint! Don’t you feel sorry for the straitjacket they are in? While you’re mulling all this over, Google “Pretrib Rapture Dishonesty” for a rare behind-the-scenes look at the same 179-year-old fantasy.

It is very plain of what the bible says about the rapture and I suggest you read 1 Cor 15:50-54 and 1 Thess 4:13-18, 5:9. I suggest you read them over and over again. If you cannot get that, there is something very wrong. Pastor John Macarthur is a very learned and godly man and speaks the truth about the bible, but being a true christian you expect as much from people that do not believe what that man has preached. I wish there were more of him than all these false preachers that are in the world, but one day people will see and be absolutely shocked when it does happen before the tribulation.

    • Jesus is coming back a second time the raputre has nothing to do with His second coming, how blind you all are, harpotzo in the greek caught up in the air, look it up in latin, or how about firstThessalonians ch:4-17,18 then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air, and so shall we ever be with the Lord. 18- where for comfort one another with these words. remember in the air not on the earth His second coming is when He comes back to earth, He’s coming for His church, and were going to to meet Him in the air and rule and reign with Him

HOPEFULLY MARK WILL REALIZE AT SOME POINT THAT HIS CRASS LANGUAGE AND LOOSE READING OF SCRIPTURE IS SIN. THE BIBLE IS CLEAR REGARDING COURSE TALK AND LANGUAGE. I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THIS MYSELF AND AM CONVICTED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN I DO.

MARK, THERE ARE MANY YOUNG PASTORS AROUND THE COUNTRY WHO LOOK UP TO YOU. REMEMBER THAT EVERYTHING WE DO IS EITHER MINISTERING OR MUNIPULATING. I PRAY THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL CONVICT YOU OF THIS, AND THAT YOU WILL TURN FROM THIS SIN.

TO ALL THE OTHER WELL KNOWN TEACHERS WHO HAVE THE PEOPLES EAR, STAND UP AND BE COUNTED, DON’T BE COWARDS. YOU SERVE THE ALMIGHTY, AND ANCIENT OF DAYS, NOT SOME NEW AGE GOD WHO WANTS YOU TO LOOK GOOD.

THANK YOU JOHN MACARTHUR, FOR STANDING UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT AND GOOD AND HOLY AND PURE. IF WE MUST ERR, ERR ON THE SIDE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

PRAISE BE TO THE KING OF KINGS

  7. Dear Brother,

I am Zeeshan Javed from Pakistan. I have studied your web site, and I found it the most wonderful site to get right to the True Word of God. My suggestion for you is to create your material in my language of Urdu, Punjabi, Hindi, Pashto, Sindhi, Sraiki, and Balochi also. It will bring lots of blessings of the Word of God for the Pakistani and Indian Urdu and Punjabi and other local languages speaking people. For that purpose, I as a translator will bring your material into my languages and into Indian language as well. I will be printing and distributing your material to my people around me. Although it will take your low expenses as well, as fund for the Word of God to reach out to the deserving people. I my self, work on a local radio station also. Many times it becomes difficult for us to keep doing this because of being minorities and because of the lack of the financial resources. I will wait for your response.

    Sincerely yours

    Zeeshan Javed
