Hillsong Songwriter Fakes Cancer

PASTOR Michael Guglielmucci has been told by church officials to report to police, who will investigate what has happened to money raised during his cancer deception.

The Australian Christian Churches told The Advertiser yesterday that it was auditing Mr Guglielmucci’s bank accounts, which included money donated from people touched by his hit song Healer.

Mr Guglielmucci confessed his two-year fraudulent cancer battle at a national executive meeting of the ACC on Saturday, and was stripped of his credentials.

Edge Church International’s executive pastor Jonathan Fontanarosa said Mr Guglielmucci had “made it clear that he is not sick”.

“But we’re waiting on further investigation to find out the full truth,” he said. “The church is in shock . . . we were totally unaware of the situation.”

It was decided at Saturday’s meeting that a statement would be read on Mr Guglielmucci’s behalf at churches around Australia this Sunday.

But an email sent on Wednesday from Sydney’s Hillsong Church detailing the hoax was obtained by The Advertiser.

It also said Mr Guglielmucci’s wife and family were unaware of the deception. The Melbourne-based preacher is in Adelaide, but has gone to ground.

His parents, who founded Edge Church International, an Assemblies of God church at Reynella, are assisting him while he seeks professional help.

The ACC has promised that all money raised deceptively will be returned or donated to charity.

The Assemblies of God, Australia’s largest Pentecostal movement, adopted its new name of Australian Christian Churches in 2007.

The former pastor with one of Australia’s biggest youth churches, Planetshakers, inspired hundreds of thousands of young Christians around the world as he performed with an oxygen tube in his nose.

Healer became an anthem of faith for believers, many of whom are suffering illnesses and were praying for Mr Guglielmucci.

The song, featured on Hillsong’s latest album, debuted at No. 2 on the ARIA charts.

In a YouTube video, he tells how the news from the hospital that he had “quite an aggressive form of cancer” inspired his song. “I just went home. I knew I had to go home and needed to get alone with God,” he says in the video.

“I walked into my studio at home and for some reason. . . I sat at a piano and began to worship.

“I sang that song from start to finish. I was crying. I just realised that God had given me an incredible gift and I realise that song was going to be my strength.”

Church community sources said Mr Guglielmucci attended his medical appointments alone.

A scheduled appearance by him at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne this weekend has been cancelled.

While many in the church were embarrassed by the betrayal, others showed support on Facebook, where a page titled “We are STILL praying for you Mike Guglielmucci” was set up yesterday.

  1. discusting.

    simply discusting.

  2. Flashing lights… loud music….Lying preachers …Natural progression really.

  3. One reader sums up this mess…
Michael Guglielmucci is just another manifestation of fraudulent Christianity. he needs to be stripped of the “high life” that goes with being a religious fraud.

He may come right if he wants to come right, but who knows, maybe he is browsing pornography while I write this. Maybe he is hanging out with whores, etc.

Why believe his confessions and explanations now? (He has been lying for years.)

Time will prove whether he intends to change for the better.

He has brought disrepute on God’s name by being a persistent liar to people who accepted him in good faith and gave him money, etc.
However the people who followed him are also part of the problem.

People should learn the skills of being discerning, and stop idolising church celebrities (the Bible calls it idolatry).

Michael is just a manifestation of a false “prosperity gospel” that is championed by the likes of Brian “You need more money” and Bobby “Kingdom Women love sex” Houston of Hillsong church. Brian’s own father Frank was kicked out of church for sexual immorality.

Maybe they could blame it on pornography, the Devil, etc., but excuses for sin never worked with God, so church leaders should stop promoting the excuse industry.

Churches like Hillsong are mostly tax free entertainment businesses with the name of Jesus Christ glued on top.

They earn millions, give away thousands, then keep the rest to grow their empires with expensive church buildings and the managers often living a hedonistic lifestyle, supposedly a blessing from God, but actually a contradiction of the Bible.

The 3 G’s (gold, girls, and glory) usually overtake church leaders who allow themselves to be seduced by worldly ways and ignored warnings like:
1 John 2:15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world–the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does–comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

“The lust of his eyes” part covers the pornography aspect well.

  4. Hillsong music changed the face of modern worship worldwide, bringing thousands of churches into a new experience of intimacy with God through music. Is it any surprise that they should become a spiritual target?

We all shake our heads at the latest Celebrity arrest or indiscretion, while even the most hardened atheist is shocked and angered at a leader of the church falling …why? Because we all deep down are looking for someone to get it right.

Someone did. His name is Jesus. Man will let you down every time, but God never will.

  5. Its understandable that the world looks at the church and mocks it, complaining that everyone is a fake who claims the love Jesus…the truth of the matter is that all of us have sinned and we are not perfect, just forgiven, and in saying that, lets us strive to be a brighter light for His glory and not our own. Pray for michael and his family, they have a long road to healing, but God is still a forgiving God.

  6. God is a forgiving God but He warned us here about charalatans like this guy :

Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Mat 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
Mat 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Like i said God is forgiving ….but He is nobodys fool !

  7. Douglas K. Adu-Boahen Says:

He disgusts me. I had friends suffering with cancer yet for him it is one big joke. God truly is merciful, but this demonstrates the times in which we live.

  8. Anonymous Says:

what about all people who are suffering and do have a lot of pain… They did got strength from him, by his story… and than they hear this was al fke.. What a mess he’ll made

  9. Whatever said and done, lets understans that God is a forgiving God and who are we to condemn this man. I believe he has repented and now let us all continue to pray for him that he will receive complete healing and restoration. Let anyone of us who have no sin throw the first stone at this man who I believe is remorseful of what he did. Let us just pray for him and believe for God to restore him.

  10. God is still GOD, He is not caught off guard by this, in fact He made sure to bring this out into the light right NOW.

I am broken, you are broken, WE ARE ALL Broken! God IS our HEALER. The words of this song are PROPHETIC, they were meant to be used to BREAK the power of sin, sickness, disease, death and the grave over our lives. Mike was given the song to have a weapon to war for his own healing, his own freedom. God simply allowed it to be shared now so we all could also use this song for our own breakthrough for healing. God is not limited to using perfect people. I am SO glad He uses broken vessels like me.

The song is anointed. Let us learn to walk in the healing and war for our healings with these words – JESUS, YOU are ALL I Need! I believe You are my Healer.

  11. Mike Bonaccorso Says:

Guys … May I suggest that the ‘church’ today is not the church that I read about in my bible. It saddens me that people have to be fake to be accepted by the entrenched religious establishment – particularly in pentecostal circles. What happened to “spirit and truth”. I just hope that the real lessons in this drama do not fall by the wayside and the church accepts responsiblity for its role in this situation. C’mon …. Jesus is all about love and relationships. If the church had these, this deception would not have lasted for two years.

I encourage all to read the word… Get to know the real Jesus and seek out people who are of like mind.

Imitate the church only as they imitate Jesus.

  12. Romans 8:28 – And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

  13. Thankfully God isn’t limited to using perfect people because if that was the case who would he be able to use. THe words of his music are the words of God and that has no boundaries and no constraints. His songs will continue to have an impact worldwide because I truly believe he is a gifted songwriter and his songs were full of Godly truths. We all get it wrong. Michael will have to deal with the consequences of his actions just like we all have to. With great power, comes great responsibility.

  15. throw the first stone if you can.

  16. the enemy would have nothing more than to make us hate this song, truely i believe no matter what the writer was going through the song still holds true. we all need a healer , we all will need great amounts of forgiveness in life. if sin is sin then we cant hate this writer you’ll simply be a Pharisee yourself. He will face consequences we may never know, so continue to love the sinner and hate the sin. God truely is our healer. and to Him be the glory He makes all things new, wvwn this writer.

  17. it is amazing how God can use saint or sinner for His glory. I watched the video and was moved, not by his story, but by God’s Spirit. the song is a blessed song and i truly believed it was inspired from the heart of this man who was so lost in his own iniquity. in the quiet we can’t hide what we are from God, but we can from others. it was in that moment that he wrote this song knowing he needed a healer, not for cancer, but something else. why he decided to come up with cancer is beyond me, but he knew he was sick. we all are in some way or another, but most of us are fortunate to not have to live out our lives in front of the crowds feeling pushed continually to be better, say something inspiring, etc. maybe he just couldn’t deal with the lie anymore and the success far outstripped his ability to hide the pain and iniquiity. he manifested it in a lie in what i believe was a heart’s cry for people to see that he truly was sick. twisted yes and there is no excuse for taking liberty to deceive. in fact the word says that the teacher is held of a higher degree of accountability than others and that is the price he is paying now. no reason to throw more stones. God is happier now that the truth has been revealed and not only that, but he will still use this story for His glory. He always does and the cynics that would bash, they wouldn’t understand anyway.

  18. Except for the grace of God, there go I

  19. hey guys we cannot blame this guy named mike.. we should be thankful because God really healed him… healing does not mean being cured from biological deseseas it could be something else like spiritual cancer.. I thanked God because He truly healed Mike.. and Bible says he who has no sins can throw stone first!!!!!!

  20. Leiv Black Says:

I think this is a perfect oppurtinity to show the unconditional Love of Christ. Mr Guglielmucci dispite you deception, let the record show that I love you. You are no more a sinner than me or anyone else on this Earth. All have fallen short of the Glory of God. You are still a Son of God and there is nothing you can do, NOTHING, that can seperate you from the Love of Christ. You are loved.

  21. Love your website! Just wanted to say hello and connect with you. We are on a Paul Washer – Ten Indictments – offensive. Check out my recent blog http://www.time2stand.wordpress.com

God bless and keep it up!

  22. I was at Hillsong Conference and saw the man play the song healer with a freakin canula in his hand. They had a special prayer service over the guy at the end of the song. 28 000 people prayed for him, the whole thing may have taken 15 min. All the senior pastors laying hands on this guy. I am a Registered Nurse who was working in Oncology. I watched many people die of cancer. This guy who had the trust of many must be mentally ill. No one in their right mind would have done this!!!!He needs help…….

  23. oh and by the way! The excuse of the he had so much pressure being brought up in the lime light….etc or we are all ill in some way!!!! That really does not cut it. Dont make excuses for the guy his story and his song are a lie and very discouraging.

  24. I do not feel we should condemn him. We dislike what he did. It was not honorable. I believe we should leave it to God, like one of the bloggers mentioned above we should pray and receive guidance only from the perfect one.

Above all things, God is great. He always has, he always will. The church is not what it will take us to him. Our relationship is. Hillsong music has truly helped me to develop an intimate relationship with my Lord.

  25. He confessed and God is faithful and just to forgive, so let us also learn to forgive. No matter what, I give thumbs up for the song

  26. I think that people should not hate him for what he did. Although it was horrible, we should forgive him and still love him!!!! All of that happened to teach us a lesson. A lesson that we have to love one another and forget our friends for doing wrong for we know that with God all things are possible!!!!! Praise our Almighty GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. It’s so sad that we’ve lost the truth that God does heal people, so that we feel the need to drum up something in God’s defense. You know the Holy Spirit is that powerful and more.

  28. its sad that he took advantage of the position God gave him for personal gain.. he obviously has some issues.

  29. We have all made mistakes. Does his sin mean that God wont forgive him or that God loves him less then anyone els. Of course not!!!!!! I am by no means excusing his sin or what he did because it was a tragedy that hurt so many but God loves and He forgives and He is soverign. This should be a vital reminder to us all that sin starts small and can grow into something close to this that affects everyone we love and know. Be careful and dont let satan get a foothold in your life like he did with this man. We should pray for him and his family.

  30. Thank God he has changed now. That is the most important thing.

  31. This man did have a cancer. It was pornography. it was eating him up. but he could not stand before thousands of people and say this. He used cancer instead. He was VERY wrong. But he probably felt like someone with a horrible disease inside that needed to be healed. I do not agree with what he did. I am a cancer survior. It is a scary thing. I didn’t want it, and I wanted it to go away- TO GET OUT OF MY BODY! I needed a Healer. I still do. Not for the cancer anymore, but for all the other “scary” cancers in life. I believe, YOUR my HEALER… I believe YOU ARE ALL I NEED….. YOU HOLD MY WORLD IN YOUR HANDS.

Let him who has never sinned cast the first stone………………..

  33. […] cause for concern. We have seen the levels of forgiveness handed out to the likes of Ted and Pastor Michael Guglielmucci. Why? Because they repented. Indeed the bible says there is only one unforgivable sin, the blasphemy […]

  34. Anonymous Says:

People often say – look at this so-called Christian or look at what this minister has done. This criticism is what takes ones focus off what is important i.e. first of all look at oneself and see where we are with God and what our personal relationship is before we condemn others
