Athletic Ministry Responds to Franklin Graham on Olympic Evangelism

Posted in Billy Graham Association, Mission & Martyrs on May 17, 2008 by Billy Creighton

Steve McConkey of Four Winds Christian Athletics International Track and Field Ministry sent out this statement regarding Franklin Graham’s opposition to evangelism during the Olympics. A Slice salute today to Mr. McConkey for what he is doing.

(MADISON, WISCONSIN) Billy Graham’s son, Franklin recently stated that Christians should not evangelize during the Olympic Games as it is against the law. He recently talked to reporters in China while visiting communist officials. The Chinese government has stated that evangelism will not be tolerated during the Olympics.

The underground church thinks differently. “It is a matter of who heads the church and it is certainly not the government,” says Bob Fu, China Aid president in an interview with OneNewsNow. He believes the underground church welcomes evangelistic efforts.

4 Winds believes Christians should witness during the Olympics. Since the summer of 2006, 4 Winds has collected testimonies of potential Olympic athletes and has allowed outside groups to take them into the underground church, estimated to be over 100 million people.

Track and field athletes who have won six gold and four silver medals have had their testimonies put in the underground church. The athletes are not active in distributing them. More testimonies are being collected.

4 Winds president Steve McConkey states, “Underground church leaders asked to use the testimonies of the athletes. We hope that the Lord would use them.”

Athletes are not paid for their testimonies and the testimonies are not sold for publication. 4 Winds is located in Madison, Wisconsin and is an international evangelistic and teaching ministry involved in track and field.

Steve and his wife Liz have been in track and field ministries since 1981. They have ministered at the Olympics, the Olympic Trials, and the USA Championships. Steve was a former USA National Track and Field Club Coach from 1982 through 1992.

On evangelism during the Olympics, Steve believes “Christians should use caution and do as God leads.” 4 Winds is encouraging athletes not to change their routine during their preparation for the Olympic Trials that will be held from June 27 through July 6 in Eugene, Oregon.

The Trials will be held at Hayward Field, site of the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympic Trials. The largest national championship track meet in the world, the U.S. Olympic Trials hosts more than 1,000 athletes. More than 350,000 fans attended the last two Olympic Trials in Sacramento.

After athletes make the Olympic team, 4 Winds is encouraging athletes to concentrate on their performances at the Olympics. After their performances, win or lose, athletes are encouraged to share their faith through the media as they normally do every year.

“Athletes should not change who they are,” states McConkey. “These men and women love Christ and are not mean-spirited. We are asking Christians throughout the world to pray for all Christians who will go into China.”

4 Winds recently had an anti-boycott statement distributed throughout the United States. A boycott of the Olympics is not the answer as that would only hurt athletes. Also, “Jesus and the apostles went into challenging countries and did not boycott them.”

Franklin Graham: “No Missionary Work During Olympic Games”

Posted in Billy Graham Association on May 17, 2008 by Billy Creighton

Franklin Graham is following in his father’s footsteps by serving as a shill for the Communist Party. This time, however, it’s the Communist Part of the People’s Republic of China. His father, Billy Graham, made an infamous trip to Russia during the cold war and came home declaring to the media that he hadn’t seen any persecution of Christians while he was escorted by the KGB through the Orthodox show piece churches. After appearing at one of the communist approved 3SPM Protestant megachurches in China, Franklin Graham has declared that he opposes missionary efforts during the Beijing Olympics. We all must have missed that clause in the Great Commission that stated, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature…unless it’s during a Greco-Roman sports celebration hosted by communists who are anxious to show the world what a great God-hating system they have.

Shame, shame on these celebrity evangelicals who have never suffered a day in their lives for Jesus Christ, who rub shoulders with the world’s power elite, and gear their “evangelism” to please them. How dare Mr. Graham go to China where even secular human rights groups warn about the violent human rights abuses of Christians in their house churches. See China Aid’s most recent reports of pre-Olympic abuses of believers. These are Christians who rightly refused to be controlled by the anti-Christ communist government and who are choosing to obey God rather than man.

Lord, help strengthen your suffering church, and shut the mouths of celebrity Americans who call for an end to evangelism in order to please the communists. May your Gospel go out with power especially during the Olympic games when millions of unsaved souls from around the world will be located in one place. In Jesus name, Amen.

Bob Fu of China Aid: Chinese Christians Will Obey God First, Mr. Graham!

Posted in Billy Graham Association, Mission & Martyrs on May 17, 2008 by Billy Creighton

Bob Fu of China Aid responds to Franklin Graham’s cowardly and communist-appeasing statement on Olympic evangelism.

“The Chinese Christians are law-abiding, patriotic citizens, but when an unjust law demands them to go against their faith and Jesus’ teaching of the Great Commission, they can not and will not succeed to a ‘faith moratorium’ in order to please an atheistic government during the Olympic Games, even if that means enduring imprisonment and torture. Mr. Graham’s comment is a deep offense to hundreds of House Church prisoners and their family members.”

Statement By Franklin Graham on Chinese Evangelism Comments

Posted in Billy Graham Association, Mission & Martyrs on May 17, 2008 by Billy Creighton

Franklin Graham released this statement yesterday regarding the controversy his remarks about evangelism during the Olympics.

In my work with both the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan’s Purse, I want to minister to the physical and spiritual needs of those that are suffering and hurting. This year we will work in more than 100 countries and in each one we are always open and honest about our ministry, that we are Christians and that we want to help their citizens in the name of Jesus Christ.

I support Christian groups that want to do ministry in China during the Olympics. However, I believe we must be sensitive to and respectful of the local church and the impact we as outsiders could have on them. We are guests in China and anything we do or say has a lasting effect on Chinese Christians that will be there long after the Olympics when we are gone. If we intentionally or inadvertently engage in any illegal activity we could jeopardize the well being of these Christians and the church in China. For anyone that wants to review the current laws of China regarding religious activity we have posted this information on

During my visit to China I have been very impressed and surprised by the incredible growth the church has experienced over the past 20 years. Personal evangelism and discipleship is alive and vibrant in China. The church is growing so fast that the greatest need right now is for more theologically trained faculty to prepare the next generation of pastors and clergy.
There is still progress that can be made in the area of religious expression in China, but I am encouraged by the current direction. My prayer is that the church in China will continue to be strengthened and grow. Let us do everything we can to encourage and help the church in China as the world’s eyes will be on their nation this summer.

Ingrid Schlueter ‘CrossTalk Host’ Response.

Friends, the insularity, willful blindness and appalling sell-out of evangelical celebrities never ceases to amaze me. First off, we need a definition of the local church. Franklin believes that the communist approved 3SPM Protestant church is indeed the true body of Christ, even though 3SPM teaching has been changed to meet the approval of atheist communist leaders. That’s problem number one, and it explains why he is “encouraged” at the current direction of the communist government as police rampage through house churches to terrorize and intimidate. He is “encouraged” by the brutal treatment of countless house church pastors and Christians who have been brutalized, jailed and sentenced to labor camps for refusing to let the communists dictate to their churches, all of it reported on widely in Christian media around the world. I would encourage an immediate visit to Voice of the Martyrs website, or China Aid, run by Chinese-American, Bob Fu. This is the direction Franklin Graham finds encouraging? Or are those in his office internet not able to log on to these websites?

Rather than take a stand in defense of the suffering and hurting persecuted true church in China, he prefers to go and speak at posh, showcase communist-approved megachurches with the cameras and TV lights surrounding him and have his handlers release slick, PR statements to appease the donors. It’s the Graham way. This is just what his father did to the Soviet Christians. Shame.

Billy Graham Denies The Only Way

Posted in Billy Graham Association on May 8, 2008 by Billy Creighton

Billy Graham on the “Hour of Power” show saying that people can get to Heaven another way besides through hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and then repenting and believing the Gospel. He basically says that “good” and “sincere” people who know nothing about Christ are on their way to Heaven.
